Writing my Advance Directives

What does the law say?

Article 1111-11 of the French Public Health Code:

“Any adult may write advance directives in the event that they are one day unable to express their wishes. These advance directives express the person’s will regarding end-of-life decisions concerning the continuation, limitation, withdrawal, or refusal of treatment or medical procedures (…)”

What are Advance Directives for?

“Advance Directives” for end-of-life situations are your written wishes regarding the treatments or medical procedures you do or do not want, in case you are no longer able to communicate following a serious accident or due to a serious illness. They concern the conditions of your end of life, i.e. whether to continue, limit, stop, or refuse treatments or medical acts.

Who can write their advance directives?

Any adult has the right to write them, regardless of their personal situation. But it is not mandatory, you are free to do so or not.

When should you write your advance directives?

You can write them at any point in your life, whether you are in good health, ill, or living with a disability.

How long are they valid?

They are valid indefinitely. However, you can modify them, fully or partially, or cancel them at any time.
