Need more information?
What are the side effects?
Radiotherapy is a local treatment, meaning that side effects will depend on the area treated. Patients are given cards to inform them of expected side effects by location.
Does radiotherapy cause hair loss?
Radiotherapy has no effect on the scalp and hair, except in the case of cranial radiotherapy, which can cause hair loss localized to the treated area.
Will I be tired?
Fatigue is one of the side effects of radiotherapy. It can be caused by anemia, loss of appetite, depression or toxic substances produced when cancer cells break down and die. During radiotherapy, the body uses more energy to heal itself, which is why fatigue is not always relieved by rest. Frequent daily travel to receive treatment can also be a source of fatigue. Fatigue generally dissipates gradually once radiotherapy is over.
Do I need to follow a special diet?
Certain treatments, particularly in the abdomen and pelvis, may require a special diet. During your pre-treatment consultation, your doctor will tell you whether a diet is necessary.
Are there any precautions to take before, during and after the session?
Depending on your treatment, certain precautions may be taken to limit the side effects of treatment. These instructions will be given to you by the doctors and technicians.
