Article 1111-11 of the French Public Health Code:<\/p>\n

“Any adult may write advance directives in the event that they are one day unable to express their wishes. These advance directives express the person\u2019s will regarding end-of-life decisions concerning the continuation, limitation, withdrawal, or refusal of treatment or medical procedures (…)”<\/p>\n

What are Advance Directives for?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Advance Directives” for end-of-life situations are your written wishes regarding the treatments or medical procedures you do or do not want, in case you are no longer able to communicate following a serious accident or due to a serious illness. They concern the conditions of your end of life, i.e. whether to continue, limit, stop, or refuse treatments or medical acts.<\/p>\n

Who can write their advance directives?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Any adult has the right to write them, regardless of their personal situation. But it is not mandatory, you are free to do so or not.<\/p>\n

When should you write your advance directives?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

You can write them at any point in your life, whether you are in good health, ill, or living with a disability.<\/p>\n

How long are they valid?<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

They are valid indefinitely. However, you can modify them, fully or partially, or cancel them at any time.<\/p>\n
