What is a psychologist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A psychologist is a mental health professional who has completed at least five years of university education in psychology and holds a Master\u2019s degree. Unlike a psychiatrist, a psychologist is not a medical doctor and does not prescribe medication.
\nA clinical psychologist specializes in understanding emotional and psychological functioning, as well as personal and relational difficulties in children, teens, and adults.<\/p>\n

They can help you navigate challenging situations.
\nThey provide nonjudgmental support, have no emotional ties to you, and maintain professional confidentiality.
\nThey are trained to recognize and address the psychological impact of cancer and its treatments and work closely with your healthcare team to ensure comprehensive care.<\/p>\n

Why should you meet with a psychologist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • To talk about your illness and fears in a way that\u2019s different from conversations with loved ones, even though their support is important.<\/li>\n
  • To better cope with the physical, emotional, and relational disruptions caused by the disease and its treatments.<\/li>\n
  • To improve communication with your family and avoid misunderstandings or unspoken tensions.<\/li>\n
  • To find the right way to talk to children about the illness.<\/li>\n
  • To get support during emotionally difficult moments, during or after treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    How and where to access this support?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    A psychologist can meet with you at your request, or in some cases, at your doctor\u2019s suggestion\u2014with your consent.
    \nSessions can take place during treatments (chemotherapy or radiation therapy), during a hospital stay, or in outpatient consultations by appointment.
    \nThe duration and frequency of support are determined together based on your needs.<\/p>\n
